Down by two with just 10 seconds left on the clock, the Baker University women’s basketball team had one last chance to score. The Wildcats were unable to make a shot, though, and fell 69-67 to No. 9 MidAmerica Nazarene University Thursday.
“We need a better 10 second play, no doubt,” head coach Ben Lister said. “MidAmerica (Nazarene) did a good job of taking away our first option, which is Alisha, but I was probably as frustrated as I’ve been with the confusion out there because they run that play a lot.”
There seemed to be some confusion for the Wildcats at the start of the game as they trailed the Pioneers by 20 points with just five minutes to go in the first half.
“We were just trying too hard early (in the game) to get a big time win against a top 10 team,” Lister said. “We just played a little too tight and were a little too timid, and we couldn’t get into the rhythm until about the five minute mark in the first half.”
One player who was able to help the Wildcats get back into the game was sophomore Kyrstie Ehm. The bench player shot and made a personal high of six three-pointers and finished the game with 22 points.
Despite the loss, Lister is proud of the Wildcats for their effort against MNU, which is the top ranked team in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
“It’s one of those things, we came up short against a good team and we realize we have to play the full 40 minutes, and can’t spot them 15 points,” Lister said. “We have a huge week this week. We have three big games, so we want to build off the things we did well this game.”
The Wildcats will travel to Springfield, Mo., on Feb. 18 to take on Evangel University.
