Two juveniles admitted to vandalizing the outside of Collins Library, the inside of the Ivan L. Boyd Center for Collaborative Science Education and other areas of Baldwin City on Feb. 8.
“The juveniles were being apprehended for another crime and during the questioning, that is when the vandalism at Baker came up,” Dean of Students Cassy Bailey said. “The police have a full confession.”
Since the vandals were juveniles, their names could not be released by the police.
“I don’t know if (the Douglas County District Attorney’s office) formally charged them yet,” BCPD Records Clerk Kerry Jacques said. “Because they are juveniles, it is a little different. We send the paperwork down and then they review it for charges.”
The Douglas County DA’s office was contacted Monday but could not be reached for comments on charges.
The two juveniles spray painted the letters “BL” in two spots on the perimeter of Collins Library, one being on the east side and the other west side of the building. They also spray painted three different areas of a staircase, a computer and lab equipment inside of the newly-renovated Boyd Center and parts of the Darby-Hope theater.
“The university has issued letters of no trespass to those two juvenile students,” Bailey said. “They are in no way affiliated with Baker. In other words, their parents don’t work here or their guardian. They don’t go to school here.”
The vandals also sprayed graffiti in other locations around Baldwin City.
“They got the east side of the post office, they got a private home, and they also got the (Baldwin City Recreation Center) vans,” Bailey said. “It was a little bit more widespread than just Baker.”
While Bailey was disappointed about the incident, she said the Baker administration is being proactive about making sure vandalism or other crimes do not happen on campus. Bailey indicated that three things would be looked at in order to increase campus safety.
“One is that we will probably have more security measures such as security cameras,” Bailey said. “We will also do a review of how we lock buildings and check buildings. … The third thing that happened is that we now know that the spray paint allegedly came from our own source, so while the two juveniles were in the building, they found spray paint that the university uses. So we need to do a review of how we keep and store such items.”
