With the cold weather in Baldwin City the past few weeks, people will be looking to get away for spring break March 9-17.
Sophomore Cali Proctor, along with nine others, will be making a five-day trip to Panama City Beach, Fla.
“We thought about going to South Padre (Island), (Texas), but we made a group decision to go to Panama City,” she said, “mainly because it will be cheaper.”
The Panama City Beach Spring Break Concert they are attending will feature country singer Luke Bryan. Also performing is Colt Ford, who is a country rapper whom the group has connections with.
“One of the guys going knows some members of the band, so we’re going to get backstage passes and everything,” Proctor said.
However, it is a different story for a few athletic teams.
Junior Josh Zach and the Baker baseball team will get very little downtime, playing six games in a 10-day stretch during the break.
“I have been playing over spring break since high school, so I don’t mind,” Zach said. “It’s something with baseball that you just get used to.”
They are looking to bounce back from their 1-9 start to the season.
“We’ve been talking about it, and coach said to bring all three facets of the game together,” Zach said. “One game we will have a good pitching performance, but have a bad hitting night and the next we’ll hit pretty well and not play as well on defense.”
The baseball team will play its conference opener against Central Methodist University March 15, a game that the team is gearing for.
“CMU is going to be a big game,” Zach said. “Our goal now is to perform in the conference. Once conference starts, it’s a whole new season, and that’s something we’re looking forward to.”
While the baseball team will be traveling around the Midwest, the softball team will be heading to Arizona for the Tucson Invitational. The team’s last two doubleheaders have been either postponed or canceled, so these 10 games in five days will be the first it will play in over a month.
“It will be a good experience for us,” senior Summer Kelley said. “We’ve only played two games four weeks into the season, so getting out there will be fun, and it’s been so cold here that we’ll get to enjoy the nice weather.”
While Kelley realizes the tournament will be very competitive, she thinks the Wildcats can match up well with any team.
“We have an athletic team that can score a lot of runs, so this stretch of games will open our eyes to what we can do against tough competition,” Kelley said.
The team plans on bonding a lot while in Tuscon and will be volunteering with the local Boys and Girls Club. Volunteer work is something they have experience in doing this school year.
“We did a volunteer night for adults with Down syndrome in the winter, and it was very moving,” Kelley said. “Events like that are some of the best things that can happen for team chemistry.”
