It was another day and another no-hitter for junior Erin Greenwood when she shut down the offense of Peru State College softball team Saturday in Peru, Neb.
The reigning NAIA National Pitcher of the Week threw her second no-hitter in a week, as well as her third complete game shutout in her last four starts in a 7-0 Baker victory in game one of its doubleheader. A walk given up with two outs in the sixth inning kept Greenwood from achieving a perfect game.
Neither team could find any offense in the first three innings, until the Wildcats were able to score on a single by freshman Mallorie Nelson and then three consecutive errors by the Bobcats put BU up 2-0. That heated up the Wildcats' bats, as they were able to compile five more runs from the fifth inning on.
Sophomore Alyse Menghini led Baker with three hits and two RBIs in the first game, and Nelson also had three hits and one RBI.
The second game started scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Peru State’s Emily Marish doubled to deep right-center field to send a runner home. That was the first of two runs that inning, before Greenwood came back in relief for Nelson.
Greenwood’s no-hit streak was snapped at eight innings in the fifth, and then the Bobcats were able to score a run off her in the sixth, increasing their lead 3-1. That’s where the score stayed, completing a two-game split with Peru State.
Baker is 6-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and 14-8 overall. The Wildcats will play MidAmerica Nazarene University Wednesday at Cavaness Field. Game one will begin at 5 p.m.
