All right, Baker University students, my year as student senate president has given me plenty of insight as to the most common questions, myths, and misconceptions of an average BU student. So here they are, answered, busted and dispelled.
1. Why can students not live off campus?1. Why can students not live off campus? 1. Why can students not live off campus?
Contrary to popular belief, Baker does not want to keep its students under lock and key for their entire four years (or however long it takes you to get through all those general education requirements) here. The primary reason for requiring most students to live on campus is monetary. Baker gets a lot of its money from students living in the residence halls and buying meal plans. So, if you don’t want tuition to go up even more, I’d say you should be content staying on campus.
2. Misconception: There’s never anything to do at Baker.2. Misconception: There’s never anything to do at Baker. 2. Misconception: There’s never anything to do at Baker.
Oh, really? You’re bored? Is Baldwin City too small for you? Well, Baker has more than 50 organizations on campus and while not all of them host events, not a single week goes by without some sort of activity. In fact, another common complaint I hear from organizations is that their events have poor attendance. That math doesn’t add up somewhere. So put down your beer, stop complaining about Baker being boring and go join in on the activities!
3. Why are the hours of the weight room limited?3. Why are the hours of the weight room limited? 3. Why are the hours of the weight room limited?
Once again folks, this one is about money. It is a liability to have the weight room open without someone being in there acting as a supervisor, and the athletic department only has a certain amount of money to pay students work study hours to work in the weight room. While this isn’t super convenient, I can also easily imagine a situation in which an overly confident college student (and let’s face it, it’d be a male) tries to squat 100 pounds over his limit around midnight and winds up incapacitated on the ground for six hours until someone else comes into the weight room. Males are too important to our society for something like that to happen. So whine all you want, but I say safety first in this situation.
4. Myth: If you get hit by a car while in a cross walk on campus property, your tuition gets paid for.4. Myth: If you get hit by a car while in a cross walk on campus property, your tuition gets paid for. 4. Myth: If you get hit by a car while in a cross walk on campus property, your tuition gets paid for.
Sorry everyone, but I’ve read the student handbook from cover to cover (yes, it was boring) and this myth is busted. There is nothing in there about granting tuition to any student who gets hit by a car in a campus crosswalk. So, I’d advise keeping that day job and avoid making a habit of darting into the street. Also, to all of you who have seen Dean Man On Campus, Baker doesn’t give you straight A’s if your roommate dies, either. So to recap these rather dark myths: running into the street and killing your roommate will most likely have nothing but bad repercussions.
