Not much can be accomplished in the sport of tennis with a lack of energy and snow on the ground.
That’s just what the Baker University men’s and women’s tennis players are thinking, including sophomore Ryan Gleue who says it’s been “an all right season” for BU.
“We didn’t expect too much coming into the season,” Gleue said. “We knew we could compete with some good teams, but we also knew that we would have a tough schedule and wouldn’t be as great against other teams.”
What the team didn’t anticipate, though, was how often it would have to practice in an indoor facility in Lawrence due to poor weather conditions so far this season. Gleue said practicing inside has been a challenge and it hasn’t helped improve their game much at all.
With a record of 3-8 at this point in the season, Gleue would like to see the team come out with more energy in its upcoming matches.
“Sometimes, it seems like we gradually get into the swing of things rather than coming out of our warm up ready to go,” Gleue said. “I’d like us to work on that.”
The men will get their chance to strengthen their action as they take on Cowley County Community College this Saturday in Arkansas City.
The women’s team will also take on CCCC Saturday as the Wildcats look to improve their 5-7 record on the season.
In its last five match-ups, the women’s team has gone 3-2 with 6-3 victories over Kansas Wesleyan University and Graceland University and a 7-2 defeat over Tabor College.
