Baker University’s Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and Alpha Chi Omega sorority are teaming up to raise money for youth AIDS awareness and domestic violence awareness by hosting Spiking Out, a charity sand volleyball tournament, all day Saturday.
The annual tournament consists of pool play and then the teams are seeded into a tournament bracket. The pool play will take place at Sigma Phi Epsilon and Delta Tau Delta fraternity, which is a sponsor for the tournament by allowing use of its volleyball pit.
Teams can have up to eight players and registration is $50 per team. There will be food and drinks for sale too, as well as a drawing and auction with prizes.
The money raised is split 50/50 to be donated to the Willow Domestic Violence Center of Lawrence and the Douglas County AIDS Project.
Owen Lewis, Sigma Phi Epsilon Vice President of Programming, said the two charities are local which makes the tournament more meaningful.
“Both are based out of Lawrence and Douglas County, so they’re services our students can use or receive if they needed to,” Lewis said.
Lewis said the volleyball tournament is a good event for students to have fun and hang out, and if students don’t want to participate in the tournament, they should still come and watch.
The event hosts do request that if participants choose to drink to not have open or obvious alcohol containers at the tournament.
“Because it is greek sponsored and for charity we’re asking for limited alcohol consumption,” Lewis said. “If you really have to drink, please do it in considerable moderation.”
As of Wednesday, 17 teams had registered to participate. Lewis estimated that 20 will be registered in time to play Saturday. Teams can still register online or starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sigma Phi Epsilon. The tournament will begin at 11 a.m. at the fraternity’s house, 412 6th St.
