The Baker University softball team finished its regular season with two losses to Heart of America Athletic Conference champion Central Methodist University on Saturday in Fayette, Mo.
The first game came down to the wire, but the Eagles clipped the Wildcats by the score of 3-2. The Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning after taking advantage of two errors by the Wildcats.
Baker got a run back in the top of the fourth on a RBI double from Mallorie Nelson before giving it right back in the bottom of the inning.
The Wildcats still trailed 3-1 in the final frame and were able to drive in a run on an RBI single from junior Renata Dill, but BU was unable to complete the comeback.
Junior Erin Greenwood went the distance and struck out 10 Eagles, but fell to 15-5 on the season. CMU’s Bri Ford was the winning pitcher as she also recorded a complete game.
In game two, the Eagles got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the first inning, but they left little opportunity for the Wildcats to come back by scoring 10 runs in the second.
The game was called after five innings with the Eagles winning 12-0. CMU’s Aubrey Utley kept the Wildcats from getting anything going on offense. She threw five hitless innings, and only an error kept her from achieving a perfect game.
The Wildcats finished the regular season 22-13 overall and 12-6 in the HAAC. Baker is currently ranked third in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and will compete in the HAAC Postseason Tournament at 1 p.m. Friday at the Blue Valley Recreational Complex in Overland Park.
