Some of the featured work will include ceramic projects, musical performances and research in several areas of study.
Coordinator of Student Achievement Carrie Coward Bucher is in charge of the event for the first time this year.
“I took over as the Honors Director and the Scholars Symposium falls under that, but also I personally think that the fun of a university like Baker is that students get to do their own work,” Coward Bucher said.
There was an application to take part in the symposium, but some students presented their work at the national level compared to others who just completed their projects.
“If you go to a bigger school, there’s less opportunity to work with your faculty, to do unique things, to pursue your own passions,” Coward Bucher said. “I think one of the things that makes Baker rich is that we have students who are following their intellectual pursuits at such a young age.”
Coward Bucher believes this event can benefit students who participate in the symposium.
“This I think is a nice first step, or even intermediate step in understanding that your voice is important.” Coward Bucher said.
Senior Eric Marley entered a contemporary issue of psychology research and policy paper on Implicit Theories of Intelligence into the event.
“The most beneficial thing about the event is probably being exposed to a real scholarly conference that involves judges and awards based on performance,” Marley said.
Senior Aryn Schowengerdt has a presentation titled “The Benefits of early Learning and Foreign Language Programs” in the event.
“The benefit of participating is to better presentation skills as an undergraduate and to show people outside of our classes what we are studying and learning during our time at Baker University,” Schowengerdt said.
