After edging out Central Methodist University by one stroke to win the Baker University Spring Invitational, the BU men’s golf team knew it would have a challenging task to defeat the Eagles again.
On Tuesday and Wednesday at the HAAC Championships, the Eagles came out on top to win the conference tournament at Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville, Mo., and Baker came away as the runner-up.
“Our hats our off to Central Methodist,” head coach Karen Exon said. “We’ve been neck and neck all year long with Central Methodist … (Monday and Tuesday) was just their day, their tournament.”
Junior Andy Kelley led the way for the Wildcats as he finished fourth overall, which was good enough for a spot on the All-Tournament team for the second consecutive year.
“I’m happy to be named to two All-Conference teams,” Kelley said. “I was hoping to maybe come away with the victory and trying to win this thing, especially after (leading) the first round, but I got a good experience out of it going into next year.”
Although the Wildcats were disappointed to come up short in the HAAC Championships and miss out on a bid to the national tournament, Kelley was pleased with the improvement the team has shown.
“Last year, we finished sixth out of seven in the conference and this year we finished second and were ranked first all year,” Kelley said. “We won a number of tournaments this year. We had a really strong season and a lot of fun.”
The Wildcats will return four of their five varsity golfers next season with Kelley, junior Alex Zuzelski, sophomore Kelley Thompson and freshman Grant Grego.
The BU women’s team will look to follow up its victory at the Baker University Spring Invitational with another win at the HAAC Championships Monday and Tuesday at Spring Lake Country Club in Quincy, Ill.
Freshman Lindsey Mateer and senior Rachel Strecker have claimed the HAAC Women’s Golfer of the Week awards in respective weeks, and Mateer believes the team has what it takes to win the conference.
“I’m hoping as a team that we can just keep competing as we have been throughout the year and shoot the same scores we have been,” Mateer said.
Exon is confident in her team’s ability and thinks the Wildcats have shown that they are more than capable to win the HAAC Championships and go to the national tournament.
“We’ve had a very good season in women’s golf this year,” Exon said. “Our team has never lost in any tournament to any other HAAC women’s golf team.”
