Tradition went awry for the Baker University baseball team and the seven seniors who didn’t get the chance to play their last home games of the season at Sauder Field.
Due to poor field conditions after recent rainfall, the Wildcats had to move their senior night games to Avila University on Saturday and Sunday. Baker dropped all four games of the final conference series.
“It was pretty unfortunate that our seniors didn’t get the chance to play on our home field for the last time, but Avila was really cool about it,” sophomore Caleb Lee said. “They announced the (seniors’) names and recognized them just like we would have done at home.”
For senior Ryan Hahn, his final games as a Wildcat were a sting in the tail.
“The last games of the season are always bittersweet, but I think the series (at Avila) was just the epitome of our season,” Hahn said.
Due to the weather, the Wildcats have been able to play only nine of 44 games at Sauder Field this season.
“Mother Nature just wasn’t on our side this year,” Lee said.
Throughout the series at Avila, the Wildcats scored a total of six runs compared to the Eagles’ 40. The final scores of the games were 7-2, 15-2, 9-0, and 9-2 respectively.
“They picked up momentum early in the games and we just couldn’t get the ball rolling to catch up with them,” Hahn said.
Junior Brett Lechien wishes the seniors could have ended on a better note.
“It was a privilege playing with them,” Lechien said. “I wish them the best in whatever life throws at them, though. They will be missed as players and as great people as well.”
After the games last weekend, the seniors were able to celebrate their final year with teammates, friends, and family at a cookout across from Sauder Field.
The 2013 season came to an end on Wednesday when the Wildcats lost to the University of Kansas 8-0 in Lawrence.
Sophomore Caleb Lee threw five scoreless innings, but the Jayhawks broke the 0-0 with two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
The Wildcats ended the season with a 6-39 overall record and went 3-23 in conference play.
