KATHY WILSON – Academic Success Coordinator
A major change freshman deal with is the difference in academic difficulty from high school to college. Kathy Wilson
Academic Success Coordinator Kathy Wilson said for most students, it takes a full semester to get acquainted with the new teaching styles, which could be detrimental to a student’s grade point average.
“I see freshmen come in, embarrassed to admit that they can’t manage (classes) on their own,” Wilson said. “Seeing a tutor, someone who has more than likely been in the same class, had the same teacher and really understands what you’ll be going through is something students should really take advantage of.”
Free tutoring is available to all students through Student Academic Success services from 7-11 p.m. on Sunday-Thursday.
SAS also provides students with guidance when choosing a new academic adviser at the end of their first semester at Baker.
Students are not required to change advisers, but it is highly encouraged. Wilson believes students should advocate for themselves and change to an adviser in their discipline.
Wilson, whose office is located on the bottom floor of the library, offers many resources to students, especially incoming freshmen.
