Men’s soccer knocks off Park 2-1

The Baker University men’s soccer team took down Park University 2-1 on the Pirates’ home field Wednesday.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Bickley had a total of four saves during the game to pick up his third victory in the goal this season. He is proud of how hard his team battled against Park throughout the game.

“When we work as hard as we can for the whole 90 minutes, no one can compete with us,” Bickley said.

Penalty kicks are becoming a thing of habit for senior Andy Griffin, who is now 3-for-3 on the season. Shortly after a good PK from Park in the eighth minute of the game, Griffin stepped up to take one of his own, sending it swiftly past Park’s goalkeeper Ryan Miller.

“Andy is our captain, so we all trust him,” Bickley said. “Any time we get the chance to take a penalty kick, we know we’re going to score because Andy will step up and finish it for us.”

Freshman Jordan Thacker scored the game-winning goal in the second half. The goal was Thacker’s first of his collegiate career and allowed Baker to improve to 3-3-1 on the season.

Bickley said he would like for his team to work on staying focused at this point in the season.

“We are looking to take it one game at a time. We just want to work hard every day and not get ahead of ourselves,” he said.

The Wildcats will hit the road again on Wednesday to take on the McPherson College Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m.
