1-on-1 with Matt Bickley

You started playing soccer at 4 years old and have been a goalkeeper since fifth grade. How did you begin competing as a goalkeeper?

In all honesty, what happened was I kind of got a little chubby and I had glasses, so they stuck me in the back and I fell in love with it.

What brought you to Baker as a sophomore transfer student three years ago?

I wanted to be closer to home, and it has a really good business school and that’s what I knew I wanted to do. I also knew a lot of people that had come here right out of high school, so it felt like a good place for me to come.

How would you describe this season so far?

I think that everyone thought this was going to be a rebuilding year for us, and I think that we’ve exceeded almost everyone’s expectations but our own. I think that we still have a little bit more to prove with two regular season games left and a playoff spot already being clinched. I think that we still have some things that we need to prove to ourselves and everyone else.

How do you show leadership on the team?

I feel like as an older guy, I need to show the younger guys what it’s like on and off the field, so to go to class, to do the right things and to work hard every day in practice.

What was the hardest part of this season so far?

The most challenging aspect of this year would be all the new players that we have. We lost 11 last year and we brought in 14, so all the new faces and a lot of people with their own ideas. We just need to focus on what coach wants us to do as a group, not as individuals. It’s the growing pains of having a lot of new players.

How does it feel to be a senior?

It’s bittersweet. I hate to use that expression, but you know, I’ve been playing almost my entire life and I hope to end on a high note. Playing at Baker has been a really great experience. I mean we won a conference championship, we went to nationals, we went to the semifinals, we did a lot of really cool things, and I think that this group of guys this year have a good chance of doing something special if we can get our acts together in these last couple games. But I’ve really enjoyed my time here.
