The No. 6-ranked Baker men’s soccer team didn’t start out its conference season the way it hoped, but the Wildcats still hold an undefeated record.
BU is 0-0-2 in the HAAC after tying both Central Methodist University and Avila University, and sits at 6-0-3 overall. Following two overtimes Tuesday, the Liston Stadium scoreboard was blank as neither Baker or Avila were able to score. Senior Kome Okiomah said Avila’s defensive strategy caught BU off-guard.
“We didn’t know exactly what to do with that type of game plan they had,” Okiomah said. “It was a bad game of kickball because they got back in and defended most of the game.”
Baker collected 16 shots on goal to Avila’s six, but was unable to push one past Avila’s goalkeeper, Ray Dlugolecki.
A very similar story played out last weekend against Central Methodist University, as the team tied 1-1.
“I think Central Methodist gave us a reality check,” head coach Nate Houser said. “We can’t just show up and expect to win, we have to put effort in because teams are going to try and prove themselves.”
Spencer Nash scored Baker's lone goal, with an assist by Luke Haidarovic. The Wildcats take on William Jewell College at 8 p.m. Saturday at Liston Stadium.<br/>&#160;
