Three women qualify for NAIA pentathlon
Three women from the Baker University track team have the opportunity to compete in the indoor pentathlon event at the NAIA national meet after qualifying at the University of Central Missouri Mule Relays on Saturday.
Junior Kayla Hannam took third in the pentathlon with a team-high 3088 points. Senior Ariella Harrison’s 3036 points were good for a fifth-place finish, and freshman Jana Koegel took eighth place after racking up 2979 points. Each of the women surpassed the NAIA A standard with their performances.
Hannam also surpassed the NAIA B standard in the long jump with a mark of 5.37 meters.
The women’s team placed in the top three in five other events at the relays, including a first-place finish from sophomore Billi Pipes in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.45 seconds.
Pipes came in third in the 60-meter run just behind freshman Kiana Turner, whose 7.9-second run was good for second place.
Senior Megan Rosa took second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:22, and junior Tyler Sloan took first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of nine seconds, surpassing the NAIA A standard.
Both of the BU men’s and women’s track teams came home with third-place finishes in each of their relay events at UCM.
The women’s distance medley was made up of senior Jenna Stanbrough, Turner, and freshmen Bree Busch and Rachel Ash. The women finished the relay with a time of 13:48.
Junior David Gregory, freshmen Tyler Randall and Birdsong Warren and senior Jeremy Gathright finished the 4×440-yard relay in 3:28 for the men. Juniors Vincent Tadokoro and Tosh Mihesuah, senior Cooper Clark and freshman Corey Matteson ran the distance medley in 11:28.
The Wildcats will compete again on Feb. 21-22 at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships in Lamoni, Iowa.
