Exploring Mexico

Knappe will be taking students to Athens along the Greek coast and to Istanbul.<br/>

“The goal is to explore both the ancient and contemporary cultures of this fascinating region through the lens of art, history (and) religion,” Knappe said. “But there will also be free time to see and enjoy the beaches, markets, nightlife and the other forms of entertainment.”

The length of the trip will be 11 days. With 20 spots available for students, the price will be determined by the number of people attending. Knappe said the price will not exceed $2,900.

Sophomore Clare Courtney has already paid the deposit for the trip.

“I signed up for this specific trip because I enjoy traveling, especially with Dr. Knappe,” Courtney said. “He knows so much about art history and that makes it more fun for me.”

In January, she traveled to Vienna and Budapest as part of Knappe’s travel interterm. Courtney is is also excited to see the architecture in Instabul while traveling.

“I am excited to see Hagia Sophia. Its architecture is fantastic and its history is amazing. I can not wait to hear Dr. Knappe lecture about it,” Courtney said.

Oritz will be leading students on visits to Mayan cities and other adventurous outings.

“I hope that this course will enable students to gain an appreciation and understanding for the nature, culture and history of Mexico. But more importantly, I want this to be a transformative experience for the students,” Ortiz said.

This will be the fourth time he has offered the trip.

“These experiences force the student to self-reflect when faced with new situations as well as contribute to the development of the student’s self-confidence through the travel experience,” Ortiz said.

This trip will also last 11 days, and the cost will be $2,200.

Freshman Hayley Seibel has shown interest in this interterm.

“I think that (this trip) will be great for my environmental biology major,” Seibel said. “Some of the tours that we will take on this trip, will take place in their jungles, and it would just be awesome to learn about their environment and the species that inhabit it.”

Seibel has not been on a travel interterm yet, and this one specifically caught her attention because she has never been to Mexico.

“I think the thing that I am most looking forward to would be swimming in the cenotes, learning and experiencing the environment and the culture first hand,” Seibel said.
