Volleyball team splits at Bellevue

After a weekend at the Bellevue University Invitational in Nebraska, the Baker University volleyball team moved to an overall record of 4-4.

The Wildcats split the four-match tournament, which started off on Friday with a 3-1 win against the host team, Bellevue, 25-11, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22.

Sophomore setter Hannah Bettge racked up 25 assists and a team-high 14 kills for an .875 hitting percentage. Senior Sara Slater led the team in digs while sophomore Haleigh Offield dominated in blocks.

In its second match of the tournament, Baker fell to the No. 5 ranked Northwestern University, 25-15, 25-22, 25-15. Junior Shannon Bond put down seven kills for the ‘Cats during the match.

Saturday, the team battled through five sets to bring home another another win, this time against William Woods University, 25-16, 25-2, 16-25, 16-25, 17-15.

The ‘Cats ended the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Dordt College, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19. Dordt put down 42 kills compared to Baker’s 31. Senior Shannon McCarty led her team with nine of those kills.

The Wildcats will host their home-opening Baker Invitational this weekend in the Collins Center. BU will take the the court at 11 a.m. on Friday against John Brown University. The ‘Cats will also play Doane University that day at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Baker will face Morningside University at 1 p.m. and Sterling College at 7 p.m.
