President selected for Service Academy Selection Board

Story by Sarah Baker, Editor

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran has chosen 20 Kansans for his 2014 Kansas Service Academy Selection Board, and Baker University President Lynne Murray made the list.

All members of the board have connections to the military. Murray’s connection is her husband Jeff, who served in the U.S. Air Force.

The board will interview and review applications from more than 60 high school seniors for admission to U.S. Service Academies, which includes the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Moran stated in a press release, “Our country is fortunate to have so many intelligent, hard-working and patriotic young men and women interested in serving our country through the Armed Forces. I know the Selection Board will have a difficult time narrowing the field of qualified candidates, but I value their insight and thank them for their help in making difficult decisions.”

The board will make its recommendations to Moran, who will make the final decision. The selected students will then have to meet their respective academy’s requirements and will learn of their admission status in early 2015.
