Art majors are getting acquainted with a new two-step portfolio review process as a requirement to graduate.”I think it will be what we really need and the best way to assess an art student,” Professor of Art Walt Bailey said. The two-step process will include art-major students presenting a portfolio at the end of their sophomore and senior years to be evaluated by the art department faculty for improvement and suggestions. Professor of Art Inge Balch said it will be a good opportunity for the students to evaluate their own work and not be spoon-fed everything required.”They learn to critique themselves,” Balch said. “That way there are no surprises. You can be on track, but if you don’t move ahead you get run over.”A major part of the portfolio requirement is to present around 20 works for each portfolio, including art pieces and papers written for the art program. Junior Lesley Gillaspie said gathering work for the portfolio will not be difficult for her.”Most majors keep their stuff together anyway. It is not so much finding (the pieces) as picking them,” Gillaspie said.Senior Amy Gudenkauf said though this is an extra bit of work to complete for graduation, the portfolio may be something good to create.”I’m really not worried about it,” Gudenkauf said. “I’ve saved so much work over the years. I think it’s good for us to learn how to do a portfolio and important to see how you’ve progressed over the years.”Though the portfolio is new to each student, Balch said students won’t be abandoned in the process.”We’re going to be there all the way with them,” Balch said. “Not holding hands, but guiding.”
