Hayen: Hollywood skews view on love
Relationships can be tough with high expectations placed on them. These expectations can be caused by a variety of factors, but recently the movie industry has had an impact on the way many students view their relationship with a significant other.
With relationship standards set high by the movie industry, it has become more difficult for couples to feel like their own relationships are adequate.
A recent TED Talk given by relationship expert Jenna McCarthy discusses the belief that American women have high expectations for their relationships based on the high standards, and unrealistic perfection, portrayed in romantic comedies.
Girls go out and watch romantic comedies with their friends and then wonder why their boyfriends aren’t like the guys in the movies. It can be easy for people to get caught up in the love stories found in movies.
But it’s important to remember that the people in movies are paid actors, and the love stories are written to sell.
The production teams of these movies have ample money to spend to get great actors and provide beautiful settings. Popular actors can get paid seven figures to act like they are in love.
To fit in with a plot arch, many of these movies contain some form of conflict in the relationship when characters go through rough times, but the movies rarely show all the little quarrels that most real couples have throughout their relationship.
Conveniently, the fights are almost always resolved in the movies, and this is not always true in real life. Most people know someone who has been through a bad breakup. The reality is, not all relationships end up working out, and this is not well-depicted by the movie industry.
People should not expect to have a relationship like the ones in movies. The actors are paid to look like they are in love, and the movie budgets allow for them to be as extravagant as possible. This combination has led to a set of high standards that are unattainable for most couples. Even though movies make people take a look at their own relationships, most students still agree that it is nice to dream about having a relationship like the ones in the movies.
