Bettge tries out for USA volleyball team
Three little words. Young athletes grow up dreaming of playing on the big stage… to represent their country in the Olympic Games… to be the best. Few, though, have the courage to take their genetic gifts, athletic ability and talent to take things a step further and put that dream into action.<br/>
It takes more, much more, than just talent to become a true Olympian. Sophomore Hannah Bettge exemplifies the “much more” and is taking the steps to realize her dream.
Over the weekend of Feb. 20-22, Bettge will test her skills against the best of the best. Some 250 athletes from the largest, most prestigious Division-I collegiate programs in the nation will face off for a chance to represent the United States.
Without a doubt, Bettge has the genetics to be a stellar setter; foot speed, long arms, jumping ability, great hands – a must for any setter. But Bettge also has those “other” intangibles that make her stand out.
Along with being a great competitor, Bettge has an innate sense of the game. She keeps a calm, cool court demeanor, a tremendous work ethic and a killer personality. She is humble, coachable and extremely likeable.
Yet here she is, an NAIA athlete, on a plane for the first time, taking the risk to compete against the best players in the nation. How many people would do that?
Bettge epitomizes courage and self-confidence just as David did when he slew Goliath in the popular legend. As her coach, I couldn’t be more proud of what she represents for our team and our university.
Call me biased, but my prediction is that Baker University will have its first national team player when tryouts are over. #Bakerstrong
