Theater to open ‘Last Summer at Bluefish Cove’
The Baker Theater Department will be performing “Last Summer at Bluefish Cove” at 7:30 p.m. April 23- 25 and at 2 p.m. on April 26.
The play, written by Jane Chambers and premiered in 1980, is about a group of lesbian women and the experiences and interactions they have together on a beach vacation. Junior MacKenzie Sammons is one of the actresses in the play.
“This show is a lot like watching in on a day in somebody’s life,” Sammons said. “It could be real people and real situations, which is different than some of the other productions Baker has done.”
Sammons portrays the character Rae.
“She is the mother hen of the house,” Sammons said. “She can still joke around, but her main priority is to make sure everyone is doing OK.”
“Last Summer at Bluefish Cove” will be the first Baker theater production that senior Kacee Britton has performed in since coming to Baker.
“I told myself that I had to be in a play before I graduate,” Britton said. “It is like the stars had all aligned. When I heard what the show is about, I knew that I needed to be a part of it.”
Britton portrays the character Sue: a wealthy woman who is often ignored by the other women.
“Sue is a very smart and dynamic character,” Britton said. “She learns to gain control of her relationships, and by the end she is able to stand up for herself.”
Junior Dante Simmons is the stage manager of the production, meaning that he is in charge of making sure the actors are keeping to the script.
“In some ways this play is no different than the other plays we do,” Simmons said. “It’s a regular play where all the women just happen to be lesbians. It really emphasizes the idea that homosexuals are regular people.”
The actors believe that the plays message of equality keeps it as relevant today as it was when it premiered.
“It has a very good, important message,” Britton said. “Particularly in modern Kansas with Sam Brownback and all the issues that go along with it, it is very important.”
