Local church hosts Fish Fry Fridays during Lent

Annunciation Catholic Church has been organizing Fish Fry Fridays for approximately 15 years. They are held every other Friday during Lent from 5 to 7 p.m. The next two Fish Fries will be on March 11.

Lent is a 40-day-long period before Easter when Catholics “are trying to focus on the facts that we are sinners and that we need God’s love and his mercy,” Father Chris Rossman, priest of Annunciation Catholic Church, said.

Since Catholics cannot eat meat, except fish, on Fridays during Lent, the Knights of Columbus put on a Fish Fry for Catholics who do not want to have to make a meat-free dinner or find a restaurant that has meat-free options.

Everybody is welcome to come to the Fish Fry. The church welcomes community members and non-Catholics alike.

The Knights of Columbus, an organization for men of a Catholic parish, cook and serve the fish. Some church members bring the side dishes and desserts. The Fish Fry has an optional donation of $8.

Dave Hill, a member of The Knights of Columbus, said that the group likes to put on the Fish Fry Fridays so that they can serve the community.

Renee Linder, graduation and transfer specialist at Baker, is a parishioner at the church and says the “the food is always good.”

Linder likes to go to the fish fry because of the church’s community.

“The fellowship is great,” Linder said. “You get to see a lot of parishioners that you normally don’t always see at the church services. It’s really kind of the fellowship and a way to celebrate Lent.”
