Women’s basketball preparing for Heart tourney

The women’s basketball team is now headed to the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Wildcats ended the regular season 22-7 overall after defeating William Penn University on Saturday in Oskaloosa, Iowa. With a 16-6 conference record, the ‘Cats will enter the tournament seeded No. 4 and will take on No. 5 Culver-Stockton College at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, in the Collins Center

William Penn’s opening basket in the first 30 seconds was its only lead for the entire game.

The ‘Cats were 54 percent shooting from the field, led by seniors Jami Hodge with 21 points and Ericka Simpson with 19 points and six assists. As a team, BU was more than 52 percent from 3-point range. Hodge hit 3-4, and Kelsey Larson was a perfect 3-3.

Sophomore Courtney Hoag came off the bench to grab 12 rebounds and score seven points for the ‘Cats.

Although the Wildcats led throughout the game, turning the ball over was still an issue. Baker turned the ball over 23 times, compared to William Penn’s 15 turnovers. The ‘Cats still managed to out-rebound their opponents and keep their lead.

Now the Baker women will prepare for the tournament matchup with Culver-Stockton, which ended the regular season 22-8 overall and 15-7 in the Heart.

Baker and Culver-Stockton split their two regular-season games. The ‘Cats lost the first matchup in January, 65-57, but won the most recent matchup in February, 61-43.

In Baker’s 61-43 win, the ‘Cats were able to hold Culver-Stockton to 25 percent from the field and out-rebounded CSC 48-35.
