Baker University students will be spiking out against domestic violence and youth AIDS Saturday with a sand volleyball tournament.

Alpha Chi Omega sorority and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity will be hosting the tournament that will benefit each organization’s philanthropy.

“Spiking Out is used to raise money for both of our philanthropies,” junior Stephanie Brockmann said. “Alpha Chi’s is Women’s Transitional Care Services, which supports victims of domestic violence, and Sig Ep’s is the Douglas County AIDS Project, which benefits youth AIDS.”

Brockmann, a member of Alpha Chi Omega, and sophomore Carl Prieto, Sigma Phi Epsilon, are working together to plan the event.

The tournament costs $50 per team with up to seven players on a team. The games will be played 6-on-6. As of Thursday, five teams were registered.

“We’re hoping for a better turnout this year,” Prieto said. “This year, like most other years, people are waiting until the last minute to bring in their registration, but we’re accepting them until the day of and we’ll just get brackets set up that morning.”

Brockmann said 12 teams played in the tournament last year.

Volleyball won’t be the only activity available at the event, though.

“We’re raffling off some gift cards, and we’ll have food there for people to purchase. Some winners (of the raffles) will receive a prize package and T-shirts that the Alpha Chis and Sig Eps will have,” Brockmann said.”Later on that night, as kind of a celebration, we’ll have a couple of bands at the Sig Ep house.”

Junior Libby Steele, who planned the event last year, said organizing Spiking Out was stressful, but it turned out to be a big hit.

“I think it’s something that’s very beneficial,” she said. “I think a lot of students here really look forward to it, and I think everyone always has a good time.”

Both Brockmann and Prieto, who have helped at the event in past years as well, said it’s a fun environment and are hoping for the same experience this year.

Prieto said he specifically is hoping for nice weather, and he is looking forward to the fun environment the tournament has.

“It’s a really great environment, and it’s great knowing that all of that money raised through our raffles or entry fees goes to the WTCS and DCAP,” Brockmann said. “So, it’s purely a fundraiser and there’s food and bands and everyone’s there to just help out and do something fun at the same time.”

Spiking Out begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. The tournament will be played on the sand volleyball courts at the Sigma Phi Epsilon and Delta Tau Delta fraternity houses.
