The No. 13 Baker women’s soccer team still looks to get back on track for the season after suffering a loss to No. 18 Hastings College on Friday at Liston Stadium in the NAIA Game of the Week.

The Wildcats showed their aggressive offense early with a goal scored by Megan Johnson in the first minute with assists by Kady Dieringer and Erica Esch.

The Broncos tied the game in the 14th minute with a goal by Heidi Bartsch. This was Bartsch’s fourth goal for the season. Her first three goals all came in the Broncos’ previous game against York College in Nebraska.

The Wildcats and the Broncos remained tied through the rest of the first half. Baker had eight shots in the first half compared to Hastings’ seven. Hastings’ offense proved to get the better of the Wildcats, outshooting Baker 13 to seven in the second half.

Baker’s goalkeeper Rachel Hunt was put to the test throughout the game, recording nine saves total.

The Wildcats had an opportunity late in the second half to take the lead from Hastings, however, a close range shot by Esch was saved by Broncos’ goalkeeper Emma Toohey, who recorded three saves on the day.

With just a few minutes left in the second half, the Broncos found their answer with a strike that hit the back of the net by Michaela Vadeboncouer, making the score 2-1 Hastings.

With the Wildcats unable to answer in the last two minutes, the undefeated Broncos sealed their third victory of the season, while Baker fell to 1-2-0.

Baker began its season at home at Liston Stadium with a 1-0 victory against Bethany College on Aug. 27. Erica Esch scored the lone goal for Baker and Taylor Baum assisted. Baker then suffered a 6-0 loss to Westmont College at home on Aug. 28. In all three of Baker and Westmont meetings, Baker has yet to win.

The Wildcats will continue their stretch of games at home, facing the Ottawa Braves next at Liston Stadium at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7. The last time these two teams met, Baker defeated Ottawa 3-0.
