I can’t think of too many people who, at the sound of his or her name, makes me want to roll my eyes or shake my head in disgust. But one name always gets me ranting.
And that name is Cincinnati Bengals’ wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.
So, speaking of him, can I just rant to you for a bit about his last name?
I can’t stand it.
I wish I could say that’s the end of my rant, but it’s not. It’s always bugged me since he legally changed it two years ago to match his jersey number 85.
I may not know much Spanish, but I know enough to at least realize that “Ochocinco” is not 85. It’s eight five. If he wanted to be correct, he would have changed his name to “Ochenta y Cinco.”
Personally, I would have preferred “Ochenta y Cinco.” At least it rolls off the tongue with a more classy sound.
And if this doesn’t get under my skin enough, I find out he had planned another name change.
But it looks like he’s going to be on this “Eight Five” kick for quite some time. I found a Yahoo! Sports article the other day about how he had announced last year he would change his last name to “Hachi Go,” which is Japanese for “Eight Five” for this season.
The article even included a picture of him holding up a “Hachi Go” jersey with his number eight five on it. And he was only going to change his name from “Ochocinco” to “Hachi Go” because his Japanese fans told him to.
I don’t know what stuns me more, the fact Ochocinco still doesn’t know his number is 85, or that Japan actually has football fans, Ochocinco fans, nonetheless.
Considering the name on his jersey is still Ochocinco, who’s to say if he will follow through on his promises.
But one thing’s for certain. I won’t call him “Ochocinco.”
Call me petty, but I’ll probably just shrug it off.
