While our sympathies certainly are with everyone who was disappointed with the results of the 2008 Presidential Election, the Baker Orange editorial staff has one message to the McCain/Palin supporters: Get over it.
We apologize for the lack of sensitivity but feel compelled to remind all of you Obama-haters that Barack Obama will be our nation’s next president, regardless of how much you gripe and moan.
It is not at all uncommon – more than a week after the election – to still see anti-Obama sentiments present in the form of Facebook statuses, MySpace pages, bumper stickers and buttons. What on earth do these things accomplish now?
If you are one of these people who feature a “down with the socialist” or “disappointed over America’s loss” Facebook status, it’s time to move on. Do you really think John McCain – considered by some to be the ultimate patriot – would appreciate speech that’s intentions are to further divide our nation?
Just last week, University of Texas football player Buck Burnette displayed this gem of a Facebook status: “All the hunters gather up, we have a #$%&er in the White House.” UT head coach Mack Brown promptly kicked Burnette off the team.
More people need to take a page out of Brown’s book and start condemning anti-Obama rhetoric. Messages like the ones listed above are pointless and immature. The president-elect will not be impeached based on your social networking opinions.
Please understand that we are not trying to undermine your passion. If you are so passionate about this country, however you should want what is best for it. Now is the time to cross party lines – just like Sen. McCain promised he would do – and support our new leader in this difficult time.
