Every year, a group of new students enter Baker University uncertain about their major and what they would like to do in the future.
Tuesday’s majors fair helped to make the decision process a bit clearer for some students.
This year was the second year Baker has had a major fair where professors and students from all disciplines provide information for students about the major and career opportunities available to students with that major.
Kelly Burns, Career Development Center coordinator, said quite a few changes were made to the event this year.
After the majors fair last year, a committee was created to get feedback about the event and asses how students viewed the event.
“The major change students recommended last year was to change the event from second semester to first semester,” Burns said. “Students can really benefit from the event during first semester because this is when students are trying to decide what to major in.”
Another change in the event this year was that some FY professors required their students to attend the event. Not only did this increase the numbers, but students were aware of the event and benefited from it.
“I talked to a student today who said this event has really helped them solidify their major,” Dean of Students Cassy Bailey said.
The event was not only beneficial to freshmen, but there were a number of sophomores, and even juniors, who attended in order to learn more about different majors and the different professions available in the field.
Sophomore Warren Swenson helped out at the fair and noticed the fair was run very smoothly this year. He said it appeared that a lot of students made connections that were needed.
“There were a lot of students who attended the fair who appeared to be having a good time, engaging in conversations with professors and learning more about the different possibilities within a major,” Swenson said.
For freshman Barbara Bicker, the event was helpful to her and her friends, even though she already knew her major.
“I already knew my major when I came to the majors fair for FY, but coming here made me more confident in my decision,” Bicker said. “My friends thought that the event was a success as well.”
For students who were unable to attend the event, the Career Development Center is available to help students who might have questions about different majors.
