Five wrestlers place in Maryville Kaufman/Brand Open

The No. 15 Baker wrestling team had five Wildcats place in the Maryville Kaufman/Brand Open Saturday, which featured two NCAA Division I schools in the University of Missouri and the University of Illinois.

Sophomore Zane Baugh fared best of the Wildcats, finishing second in the 125-pound weight class. Baugh won three straight matches after receiving a bye in the first round, before falling in the first-place match to Carlos Jaqcuez of Lindenwood University.

Reigning NAIA national champion senior Victor Hughes went 2-2 in the 149-pound bracket, earning fourth place.

Freshman Jacob Smith, sophomore David Dow and senior Josh Thomas each placed fifth in their respective brackets.

Other Wildcats who earned victories in the open include Owen Tuckfield, Dustin Carsen, Nick Moore, Cole Sullivan and Conner Watanabe, with Tuckfield and Carsen winning two matches each.

With 78 total points in the open, the Wildcats had the ninth-most of the 18 teams that attended the open and the fourth-highest total of teams with fewer than 20 competitors. Heart of America Athletic Conference rival Missouri Valley College also competed in the open and placed fifth with 184 points.

The Wildcats will compete next at the UNK Holiday Inn Open in starting at 9 a.m. Saturday in Kearney, Nebraska.
