Roland Klundt, 20, who would have been a junior this fall, was killed in June during an attempted robbery at his home in Lawrence.
Investigations and court hearings are ongoing as to whether Lawrence resident Kellam Jones, 17, who police allege shot and killed Klundt, will be charged as a juvenile or an adult. If Jones is charged as an adult, he will face more serious penalties and his court proceedings will be public.
Jones was booked on charges of felony murder, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and attempted aggravated robbery, a media release stated.
According to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, a gag order was placed on an Aug. 8 hearing in which a ruling on how to charge Jones, who was 16 at the time of the murder, was expected. The gag order prohibits attorneys and other participants in the hearing from discussing what took place in the courtroom. A hearing was scheduled for Thursday stemming from the Aug. 8 hearing, but results were unavailable as of presstime.
At about 2:45 a.m. June 7, Lawrence police reported to Klundt’s home at 1311 Delaware after several reports of gunshots. Police found two men dead from gunshot injuries and later identified them as Klundt and Gage Hauk, 18, McLouth.
Lawrence police found one weapon at the scene and a second weapon one block from the residence. Jones, who is believed to have fled on foot after the shooting, was brought in for questioning and arrested June 8, and then taken to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
Police allege Jones and Hauk went to Klundt's home to commit a robbery. Police said Klundt shot Hauk and Jones then shot Klundt.<br/>In June, Jones was charged with both deaths as a juvenile under the felony murder law.
