The Student Activities Council has selected new officers and is busy planning events for the next year.
The officers are the leaders of SAC and work with the council’s coordinators, who do most of the planning.
Junior Jonathan Affalter, new SAC president, explained how the officers were selected.
“People fill out a leadership application and go through an interview process that is conducted by past officers,” he said. “They try to figure out who is best suited for each position.”
Affalter said his job as president was not to plan but to manage the coordinators.
“I’m not as much involved with coming up with ideas as I am overseeing the coordinators, directing ideas and helping with promotion,” he said. “This is my third year so I can give advice because I know what works.”
Freshman Amber Hauder, vice president for the organization, said she applied to be an officer because she thought it was a great way to get involved.
“I wanted to be an officer because I’m more of a leader than a planner,” she said.
One of Hauder’s goals is to have more students involved in SAC in the future.
“We need to get the word out to freshmen next year that anyone can be involved,” she said.
Secretary Ashley Fischer, said involvement is needed for SAC to be successful.
“We need leaders to step up and fill leadership positions so that there can continue to be fun activities for students,” she said.
Affalter said there are many challenges for the SAC.
“Our budget isn’t like (the University of Kansas’) and it is difficult to find entertainers that work for everyone on campus,” he said. “It is hard to get a bunch of different people together and we don’t like to bring in music groups because they appeal to small groups at school.”
Hauder also expressed the need for more student input.
“We give out surveys because we need a lot of student input to find out what they would like to see on campus.”
