The Baker Orange’s motto of “Covering all the important things” has proven key in garnering top honors at the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press’ annual conference April 17 and 18 in Hutchinson.
The Orange won the All-Kansas Award for four-year, private-college newspapers, while thebakerorange.com received the All-Kansas Award for all four-year newspaper websites.
Publications and websites that receive All-Kansas awards do so by achieving the highest amount of total points in their respective categories.
In addition to winning All-Kansas, members of both the newspaper and online staff racked up 26 awards in individual competitions, eight of which were first-place awards.
Senior Kyle Davis, editor of The Baker Orange, was also named Journalist of the Year for all four-year newspapers.
While Davis was more excited for The Orange to win the All-Kansas awards, he was still proud to be named Journalist of the Year.
“It’s definitely an honor, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t,” he said. “There’s a lot of hard work that goes into it, and a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff, so it’s nice to be recognized.”
Baker Orange Adviser Gwyn Mellinger said this was the first time The Orange has won both All-Kansas awards and had a student named Journalist of the Year.
“It’s a good validation of what we’re doing,” Mellinger said. “What these … tell me is that we’re doing the right things, and that our students are competitive, and you can draw the conclusion that they’re going to be competitive in the job market as well.”
