Senioritis is rampant at Baker, and not just among seniors.?
I think it is fair to say many students are getting burned out on school, and although that last final exam on May 18 is drawing near, it is still too far away to taste.?
I understand this feeling, I really do.?However, recently while sitting in classes I can’t help but get frustrated with some of the students who just don’t seem to take college seriously.
When coming to Baker, I was excited to be in classes where everyone had chosen to be there. It amazes me to see people in class talking on their cell phones, text messaging, mouthing off to the teacher or the most frustrating, sitting in their seats with the “I’m such a badass” look across their face, as if they have better things to do.?
When you’re paying $22,000 for tuition, I would think you don’t have anything better to do. If not for educational purposes, then for financial reasons.
Education is a cooperative experience.?Merely because you attend a quality university, does not automatically mean you will be successful academically. You have to pay attention in your classes, and study outside of class.?Everyone knows this; it’s what you do in college that really counts.?
So when I see those students who come to class, sitting there with that smirk on their face, I just can’t help but wonder why they even bothered coming.?Perhaps it’s more for social reasons than anything else, or maybe they feel pressured by their parents.?
We have some responsibility now; we aren’t being forced to go to class.? So if you think you are “too cool for school”, then don’t show up.?
College isn’t for everybody, and you don’t have to go to college to be successful.
We all have off days.?I am definitely not the ideal student.?Sometimes I have other things on my mind and just can’t focus.?Sometimes I can hardly stay awake because I procrastinated studying for that exam and had to pull an all-nighter.?
I don’t judge people who aren’t focusing in class, but I do get irritated with the people who make a habit of it.? They are not proving anything to anybody, and they are only hurting themselves.
College prepares you for your future career. I wonder what the people who don’t take college seriously will be like after college.
Will they suddenly be motivated to accomplish things, because there is money involved??Or will they sit in their desk with that same look that I see in their faces while sitting in class?? Even if they do realize they are in the real world and have to assume some responsibility, they may struggle in their career as a consequence of half-hearting their way through college.
For the most part, I enjoy my classes and peers.?Classes are not like high school, where students disrupt the class on a regular basis.?
It just amazes me that anyone would dish out so much money for an education and then not make any attempt to receive one.?
Some say college will be the best years of your life, and I’ll admit that the social aspect of college is, well, quite enjoyable.
?But right now I am also a full-time student at Baker University, and I plan on getting my money’s worth.
