The Baker Wildcats’ fourth-quarter comeback attempt against Missouri Valley College fell just short as the Baker football team lost to MVC 17-10, in the ‘Cats home opener, to drop to 0-2 on the season.
Head coach Mike Grossner points to the three lost fumbles and two interceptions by the BU offense in the first three quarters as the reason why the Wildcats were not able to knock off the No. 10 team in the nation.
“You can’t win any football games with that type of negative production, let alone the No. 10 team in the country.” Grossner said.
Grossner is still optimistic about how the team played and believes the turnovers are correctable.
The special teams unit highlighted the game for BU with a fumble recovery by sophomore Kyle Bolton, which was returned for a touchdown after MVC’s Tyler Davis muffed senior Garrett Chumley’s punt.
Freshman Jared Morss added to the special team’s highlights with 37-yard field goal, which was the first of his collegiate career.
“I thought we made great strides in special teams this week,” Grossner said. “Our return game has been really good for two weeks. Our offense has been struggling, so when you have a special teams play count as an offensive play, that’s huge.”
Grossner and the Wildcats hope to be clicking on all cylinders next week at MidAmerica Nazarene University and salvage their first win of the season.
