In a hearing held Wednesday, 17-year-old Lawrence resident Kellam Jones made his first appearance in adult court.
Judge Michael Malone, of the Douglas County District Court, announced Sept. 5 that Jones should be tried as an adult in connection with a crime that ended in the death of Baker University student Roland Klundt, 20, and an alleged accomplice Gage Hauk, 18, from McLouth.
Jones is charged with felony murder and attempted aggravated robbery for an event that took place June 7 at 1311 Delaware Street, Klundt’s home.
Prosecutors allege Jones and Hauk went to Klundt’s home in the early morning hours to commit armed robbery. Klundt shot Hauk, and Jones then shot Klundt.
Wednesday during the hearing, Craig Stancliffe, Jones’ court-appointed defense attorney, made a motion to withdraw as Jones’ legal council for confidential reasons.
Malone accepted Stancliffe’s withdrawal and appointed a new defense attorney.
A preliminary hearing will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, located at 111 E. 11th Street, in Lawrence.<br/>Jones is currently being held on $250,000 bond.Jones is currently being held on $250,000 bond.
