A successful weekend helped improve the No. 4-ranked Baker men’s soccer team to 5-0-1 after collecting victories over Oklahoma Christian University and Buena Vista University on its home turf at Liston Stadium.
The ‘Cats defeated Oklahoma Christian University 2-1.
Sophomore Jacob Chiarelli netted BU’s opening goal in the first half after some nice baseline work from senior Kome Okiomah, but it was quickly answered.
“Alex Burton made a fantastic save, and then three fouls later, we kicked one in for them,” head coach Nate Houser said. “That’s going to happen, and it just makes things harder for us.”
The Wildcats dominated the second half, earning more shots on goal and more opportunities than their opposition, but they were unable to score the go-ahead goal until some late-game dramatics from senior Luke Haidarovic.
With one minute remaining in the game, Haidarovic came up big with the game-winning goal on a corner kick to seal the victory. Houser said the team put a lot of pressure on the Eagles in a fast-paced second half.
“Luke (Haidarovic) came up huge for us in the last two minutes,” Houser said. “It was really exciting. The stadium seems to be turning into a magical place for us.”
In its second game, an exhibition, BU answered an early Buena Vista University goal with five straight tallies to win the game 5-1.
“We saw a lot of very, very good things in the second half,” Houser said.
Baker will see its next action Friday against Grandview University in Des Moines, Iowa, and then again on Saturday against HAAC opponent Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo. <br/>&#160;
