Rather than spending their weekend on the courts, coach Rick Weaver and the men’s basketball team headed to the golf course as they hosted the Super Scramble in Lawrence.
The Super Scramble is a fundraiser golf tournament the basketball team has hosted for several years to raise money for the basketball program.
“It’s a golf tournament we’ve had for about 20 years now,” Weaver said. “It started at the Baldwin City golf course, but that started getting a little too small so we moved it up to Lawrence.”
The Super Scramble had a great turnout this year with around 180 golfers including alumni, fans, parents, coaches and teachers coming out to participate in the fundraiser and show off their skills on the course.
“It attracts a lot of people and it lasts all day,” Senior Taylor Parker said.
As the players moved their way through the holes they faced trick shots and various distractions.
“It’s not the most serious tournament in the world,” Weaver said. “We have a lot of contests and give out prizes and just try to have a lot of fun.”
Senior Andy Hannon said he enjoyed his job distracting the players.
“They set up a microphone and a stereo system,” he said. “We would try to heckle them as they were trying to drive.”
Parker said fundraiser provides the players a chance to see the various people who support Baker basketball.
“It’s a good way for them to meet us and for us to get a chance to see how many people actually support the team,” Parker said.
The team uses the proceeds earned each year to pay for various expenses.
“We don’t have an exact figure yet as we have a number of bills yet to pay, but it was a financial success,” Weaver said.
