To Baker University, the CDC is not the agency intent on exterminating the avian flu, it is the Career Development Center.
“Our goal is to educate students regarding careers, internships and job opportunities,” Susan Wade, director of the CDC, said.? “We tend to act as a broker between employers and students and bring them together.”
Wade said the CDC assists students in creating their resumes, cover letters and almost everything else to do with finding a job.?
Kelly Wingbermuehle, assistant director of the CDC, said the CDC can only help students find a jobs — it cannot create networks and go to the interview for you.
“We can just teach students how to get a job,” Wingbermuehle said.
However, some students said they think the CDC could be doing more.
“I think that they could do a lot more things to help students find more jobs,” senior Eric Lundstrom said.? “I went up there at least five times this year and got little to no help.”
Lundstrom suggested the CDC bring more companies to the campus and give more focus to solidifying careers for departing seniors. He praised the CDC’s mock interviews and job seminars, and said the CDC offered a lot of internships.Other students said they feel that the CDC’s job lies elsewhere.
“I don’t think it’s the CDC’s job to find you a job,” sophomore Wes Mikel said.? “It’s the CDC’s job to help you find a job.”
Amity Scholar Antony Carbon said he was pleased with the help he received.
“I went up to the CDC because I needed some resume paper and they gave it to me free,” he said.
Wade and Wingbermuehle said the CDC itself is the main gateway to Baker’s career services.?The CDC is located on the top floor of the Harter Union and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.?
The CDC also has a Web site that offers information on job database searches and making resumes.?Students also have the ability to post their resumes online and take assessment tests that gauge what a person’s skills are.
Wade said the CDC is open to suggestions, and that the CDC’s current goals are making new connections with employers and improving the Web site.
