Baker falls to MVC to end regular season

The men’s and women’s tennis teams each fell to Missouri Valley College 7-2 in the last regular-season match.

One of the two wins for the Baker women came from the No. 2 doubles team of senior Holly Chestnut and junior Sophie Robertson. Chestnut and Robertson defeated MVC’s Lauryn Dayon and Bruna Messana 8-5.

Chestnut then picked up Baker’s sole singles win at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-2.

Wins on the men’s side came at No. 1 doubles with senior Thomas Irick and junior Conner Petty winning 8-6, and junior Taylor Ficke picking up a win in No. 4 singles in a third set tiebreaker 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.

This was the last home match for senior Chestnut, Morgan Francis and Irick.

The Wildcats will now travel to Webster Groves, Missouri, for the Unaffiliated Grouping Conference Tournament on Friday. The Unaffiliated Grouping Conference Tournament includes teams from both the Heart of America Athletic Conference as well as the American Midwest Conference.

The No. 4 seeded women’s team will take on No. 5 seeded Grand View in the first round of the tournament.

The No. 5 seeded men’s team will take on No. 4 seeded Missouri Baptist. A win in the first round would send the ‘Cats to take on the winner of No. 1 seeded William Woods and No. 8 seeded St. Louis Pharmacy.
