Due to last weekend’s extreme winter weather conditions, the tennis match against University of Illinois at Springfield was canceled. The ‘Cats do not plan to reschedule this match.
“They are not in our conference, and I just don’t see any room in our schedule to do it, frankly,” head coach Bruce Anderson said.
However, the team will add one extra match to the schedule, which will be played Saturday.
Both teams will face Missouri Valley College in the morning then follow it up with a match against Missouri Baptist University in the afternoon.
“That’s two matches in one day, and that can be exhausting for all concerned,” Anderson said.
Despite the challenges ahead, Anderson has high hopes for both the men and the women as they head into Saturday’s matches.
“I think that we match up pretty well against Missouri Valley on both sides, the women and the men,” Anderson said. “I think that they will be a challenge because they are going to be tough, but I think that we will go in pretty optimistic on both sides.”
The men’s team will be down one player for the weekend.
Senior Trevor Hedberg will be attending an academic conference at Weber State University and will be unable to compete.
“Strictly from a tennis point of view, it hurts us not to have Trevor in the lineup,” Anderson said. “He is our No. 4 singles, and he plays on the No. 2 doubles team.”
Freshman Casey Gleue will have to step up to fill Hedberg’s place Saturday.
“Casey is a good kid, and he has worked really hard this year, so my sense is that we are going to be fine,” Anderson said.
Both teams will hit the road for matches at 9 a.m. against Missouri Valley and 12:30 p.m. against Missouri Baptist Saturday in Marshall, Mo.
Neither team has played since they faced nationally-ranked Johnson County Community College March 25.
