Revolting.
Repulsive.
Repugnant.
The evolution of online video chatting has reached a disturbing peak with Chatroulette.
The new online social networking tool is bulging out of proportion by allowing people to visit www.chatroulette.com and interact via webcams, audio and instant messaging.
The site is simple to operate. Anyone 16 years and older can visit the site, hook up a webcam and chat with complete strangers.
Users stare at a white screen with two video feeds on the left, one on top of the other, and an instant messaging area to the right. The screen is void of color and ads creating a plain setting.
A surge of users caused a media frenzy putting Chatroulette on the evening news, but the coverage should not be encouraged.
Last weekend I witnessed an unsettling Chatroulette scene.
A handful of intoxicated college guys gathered around a black laptop and logged on to Chatroulette.
With music bumping and alcohol flowing, the guys proceeded to click from one online stranger to the next in hopes of finding some females with just as little self-respect.
Several minutes later, they got lucky.Several minutes later, they got lucky.
Several minutes later, they got lucky.
Two young women sat in front of their camera. The guys asked them to take off their shirts.
The girls replied by telling them they had to remove their shirts first.
The guys did.
Here I stood, watching college-aged guys taking off their shirts, yelling at the screen and pushing each other aside to flex in the camera.
With the help of Chatroulette, the guys had reached their primal instincts.
Chatroulette claims the site does not tolerate obscene content, yet it states the site does not provide any material, so it can’t be responsible for the content shown.
These are not standards. These are excuses.
Users do not have to register or claim an identity.
There is no way to check whether the user is 16 years old or older. The only way to supervise inappropriate behavior is for users to report it.
The lack of rules and regulations set the site up for ethical destruction.
To prove my point, I visited the site myself on a Sunday afternoon. My goal was to give the site a chance to expose its social benefits.
Within five minutes I was shocked to view three video feeds of men and their genitals before logging off nauseated.
This site is nothing but an interactive sex chat room that is stripping the human race of dignity.
Visiting the site is only fueling the fire, but those concerned with the value of life can take a stand.
There are countless people who still carry themselves with respect and live decent lives.
It is time for people to step up and restore human moral.
