Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. will be hosting its Royal Carpet Formal Saturday, and the invitation has been extended to all members of the Baker University community.
Director of Greek Life Bryan VanOsdale said the formal, to be held at 9 p.m. in Collins Center, will be a great opportunity for Baker students to “hang out and interact in a positive way.”
“Many fraternities and sororities have their own formals,” he said. “(Zeta Phi Beta) does it a little differently. They open it up to the whole campus so people can come out and have a good time meeting new friends. I just think that hopefully people will look at this as, ‘These are our friends, and we want to come out and celebrate with them.'”
Junior Michelle Burton, a member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, said that while other greek organizations on campus have formals that for the members and their dates only, Baker’s newest sorority wanted its first formal to be inclusive.
“I think it’s nice because there’s been such a big push for greek unity this year,” she said. “We wanted to have a formal for everyone. We definitely want to let people know that we are all-inclusive, and we want to bring diversity and uniqueness to campus. We also wanted to show that we’re legit and that we’re not going to start up and then die in a year.”
VanOsdale stressed that the event is open to all students.
“Zeta Phi Beta is not all black; they are historically black, and maybe historically needs to be bolded, underlined and in 72 font,” he said. “It’s just like others are historically white. This is open to the whole Baker community, no matter what nationality, race, sexual orientation or religion.”
