New bookstore, bar, coffee shop: The Nook, set to open

Elizabeth Hanson

The Nook is located on the corner of 8th St. and Grove St. in downtown Baldwin City.

On Sept. 13 The Nook, a new bookstore, bar and coffee shop, held its soft opening. The shop is located in a recently renovated older building on the corner of High St. and Grove St. This new Baldwin City business is owned by Niki Manbeck, Manbeck also owns a publishing company and was looking for a way to show off her authors. When the building became available Manbeck jumped on the opportunity to open up a bookstore in Baldwin City.

Bank owner Dave Hill and current Major of Baldwin City Casey Simoneau, own the building and several others in Baldwin City that they hope to fill with businesses to revitalize downtown.

Manbeck wants students to know she has the fastest Wi-Fi around and hopes she can provide a fun environment for people to come enjoy a drink without the loud bar atmosphere. Currently the bookstore section of the business is open 10 a.m to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and the bar is open 4 p.m. through 10 p.m. Some Sunday’s there are special hours.
