Despite an impressive 12 shots on goal by the Baker women’s soccer team, it was the Graceland yellowjackets who pulled out the 2-0 win Tuesday at Liston Stadium.
The missed chances at the goal didn’t stop the ‘Cats from playing a strong offensive game against the tough conference competitor. Junior Christine Janssens said regardless of the result, it was the ‘Cats who controlled the field.
“In terms of actual field play we dominated,” Janssens said. “We had a lot more shots, we were a lot more dangerous, and we controlled the ball a lot, but we were just unfortunate and unlucky for the two goals that they scored.”
Head coach Nate Houser was happy with the team’s performance, but couldn’t deny the incredible shutout by the Graceland goalkeeper.
“I think we did a pretty good job of staying organized and we created a lot of chances, but it’s just about getting one or two to go our way,” Houser said. “I think their goalie did a spectacular job in keeping us out of the net.”
Going into the game the ‘Cats needed a win to secure their spot at second place in the HAAC. However, a William Jewell loss to Avila University Tuesday had the same effect as a Baker victory, and BU is now guaranteed a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
“After the game we thought that we had dropped to third place in the conference and were going to have to play the first round, but Avila ended up beating William Jewell so our spot as second in the conference is secure again,” Janssens said.
The bye into the second round of play assured the women their first home playoff game in 10 years. With the team hoping its performance will be at its best going into the playoffs, Houser said consistency is the key to success.
“I don’t think changing anything is necessary,” Houser said. “I think if we do what we have trained to do and we play the way that we have been asked to play, I think that we can be very successful.”
The ‘Cats will host the winner of Tuesday’s game between Benedictine College and Lindenwood University. Senior Mikayla Medlock said the team will be confident going into a game against either team.
“No matter what the outcome, we will be ready for either team,” Medlock said. “I am confident that we can beat Benedictine again and we have learned from our mistakes against Lindenwood and will be ready to pull out a victory.”
