The end of the regular season left the Wildcats with mixed feelings as the Baker University men’s soccer team dominated the Eagles of Avila University 4-0 Monday in Kansas City, Mo.
Senior midfielder Josh Marchbank said the team was happy with the win but disappointed its season ended with a meaningless game against a weak opponent.
“It’s a bitter sweet feeling,” Marchbank said. “You are always happy to win, but we would have liked to have been playing for something more.”
Senior defender Nate Chiarelli said this game was not easy to prepare for.
“It was a difficult game to play knowing it’s our last game of the year,” Chiarelli said, “and for some of the seniors, the last game of our career.”
The first half started out slowly for the ‘Cats, Marchbank said.
Then head coach Alan Koch inserted junior defender Jordan Martin who gave the ‘Cats a lift.
“Jordie came in and brought life to the game,” Koch said.
Junior midfielder Travis Moore finally broke the scoreless tie when he found the net off a deflection late in the first half.
Almost immediately after the whistle was blown to start the second half, Moore scored again. In the 46th minute of play, Moore broke away from the Avila defense and increased the Baker lead.
Martin had a goal of his own midway through the second half to push the ‘Cats lead to 3-0.
The final goal of the game came when Chiarelli found Marchbank in the 84th minute of the game. The goal was Marchbank’s third in as many games.
In another conference match on Saturday, the Wildcats traveled to Lamoni, Iowa to face Graceland University. Baker lost 1-0.
The Wildcats finished the season with an overall record of 9-9 and a record of 4-4 in conference play.
