A world of international education is set to be explored next week as various activities have been scheduled to focus on study abroad.
Director of Study Abroad Cindy Novelo said the topic was chosen for the week to correspond with a national, yearlong dedication to overseas studies.
“We thought that it would make a good topic for International Education Week since they’ve proclaimed it the year of study abroad,” she said.
International Education Week will begin Monday with the Global Awareness Fair in the lobby of Harter Union.
The fair will feature international students, heritage students and those who have studied or are planning on studying abroad. Representatives from various study abroad programs will be present. The French Club will also be selling crepes.
Junior Ashley Schmidt, who is a member of the Council for International Awareness – the student organization responsible for organizing the week, said a highlight of the week is the People-to-People Sale. The sale will feature items made by craftsmen from around the world and purchased through fair-trade trade.
“The people really have such beautiful gifts and talents to offer,” she said. “Because that sale comes to Baker, we are able to see that gift and, in turn, help them out.”
Novelo said the sale, which benefits the fund for the Milan-Harris Award for Promoting Diversity, is advantageous on numerous levels on campus.
“You’re benefiting people around the world, and you’re benefiting the Baker student who wins the Milan-Harris award, and you’re getting cool items, so it’s a win-win situation all around,” she said.
A “Brewsday Tuesday” will be held Tuesday on the third floor of Collins Library. During the event, various students will discuss their international experiences.
“I hope the students will become aware of our international and heritage students on campus and see the wealth of information we have here on campus. I think people aren’t always aware of how many international students Baker has,” Novelo said.
Junior Jenna Collins, who will spend the spring semester studying in Avignon, France, said she’s excited for the week and the emphasis on exploring foreign cultures.
“I’m excited to see what sort of activities are going to be offered. I think international awareness is particularly crucial in this day and age, and any sort of opportunity to experience all things international should be encouraged,” she said.
