So it turns out people from Tennessee really are racist, and people from Virginia maybe aren’t.
Just kidding – sort of.
But seriously, what is Jon Stewart going to make jokes about now? Sure, he still has George W. Bush, but a Bush who admits he is wrong isn’t funny, just bizarre. Spoiler warning: what follows contains a fair amount of gloating and was written at an hour of extreme jubilation.
With the House now firmly in Democratic hands and the Senate tilting that way, it looks like Americans will get the change they voted for.
There was a lot of talk last night about the fact that many of the new Democrats in Congress (the class of ’06) are either moderate or conservative, and this may lead to less change than some might think.
Well, there has been change already without the Democrats even having to act – Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is out. Bush just realized he was no longer popular. He says he doesn’t look at polls, and he obviously didn’t. He has now seen the only poll that counts, and it was not good for him or Karl Rove.
Momentum is with the Democrats – several states voted to raise the minimum wage, something Speaker-Elect Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., plans to begin work on nationally as soon as possible.
What Americans saw on Wednesday was a side of the president they had not seen before – the loser side. And I must say that I was surprised by how gracious Mr. Bush and all of his buddies were about the horrible smackdown laid upon them.
What happens now? No one knows for sure. Chances are we will see a change in Iraq policy, work done to raise the minimum wage, stem cell research funding, healthcare reform and a plethora of other issues that actually have some bearing on the way our country works.
I think Congress and the executive branch will work together on immigration, although I doubt they will give the American people what they want.
Not only have Democrats come out as the winner this week, but so has the state of Kansas.
By dumping Attorney General Phill Kline and Rep. Jim Ryun, Kansas has returned to its moderate roots.
Moderates across the country are the real winners in this election.
Not much is left to say because there is not much more we can know.
But fear not conservatives and company – you’ll be back, just not for a long, satisfying and glorious period of time.
Also, I plan to stop writing columns, as I will no longer have enough things to complain about.
Just kidding – sort of.
