Three student soloists will open the Baker University Fall Orchestra Concert Sunday while performing “Brandenburg Concerto No. 5,” by J.S. Bach.
Senior Sarah Shipley will play the violin, senior Olivia Hernandez will play the flute and sophomore Adrienne Barclay will play the harpsichord during the piece.
“It’s exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time,” Shipley said. “I think it’s good experience right before my senior recital.”
“St. Paul’s Suite,” by Gustva Holst, “It Takes Four to Tango,” by Daniel Dorff, movements two, three and four of “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46,” by Edvard Grieg, and movements one and five of “Capriccio Espagnol, Op. 34,” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov also will be performed.
Adjunct Instructor of Music Lori McKinney is conducting the concert, which starts at 3:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
The orchestra, comprised of both Baker University students and music faculty, has been joined by musicians from the Topeka Symphony Orchestra this semester to fill out the winds section.
Senior Avaree McDonald, who plays the viola, said the orchestra has not yet practiced with the Topeka Symphony, but they will work together the day of the concert.
"They're really good musicians, so I think it will be OK," she said. <br/>McDonald also said she's excited for the concert because the orchestra is playing a lot of really good music.McDonald also said she's excited for the concert because the orchestra is playing a lot of really good music.

“I’m looking forward to (Sunday’s concert) very, very much,” McKinney said. “A lot of it is sounding very good, and we’re just putting the final touches on the spots that need more work.”
